Tithe Applotment Books
The Tithe Composition Acts of 1823 and former years, made provision for the payment of tithes to the Anglican clergy of each parish in Ireland. The payment was to be in money rather than in kind. A number of valuation surveys were carried out between 1823-1837 in all Irish parishes for the purpose of calculating the Tithe. Towns and cities were excluded from these surveys. The survey for Kilmore took place in 1833. The Tithe Applotments for each parish list the tenants who occupied the land. All those listed were liable for the payment of tithes to the Established Church, the Church of Ireland. Everyone, regardless of religion, was obliged to pay. The Applotment Books list the name of each tenant, his townland, parish and land holding. The Tithe Applotment Books are largely used as a census substitute in modern genealogy.
