Extracts from The People, 1877-1916
6 October 1877, Sarshill
Deaths, Sept. 30, at Sarshill, Kilmore, Bessie, relict
of the late William Sparrow, Esq., in the 87th year
of her age.
21 February 1880, Burrow of Ballyteigue
The Late Storm.
On Monday during the strong gales from the south east, eight large bullocks
were washed ashore on the Burrow of Ballyteigue. On the same occasion
there was a quantity of large barrels of tallow washed in. The latter
are considered to be a portion of the cargo of an Italian schooner,
which was run down five years ago 30 miles off one of the Saltee Islands.
21 February 1880, Brother Jonathan
Inquest.
On Monday the headless body of a man was washed ashore on the Burrow
of the Bar of Lough. It is supposed to be the body of the mate of the
steam tug Brother Jonathan, of Cork, which was lost near the Saltee
Islands some time ago. An inquest was held before E.R. O'Farrell,
Esq., coroner for the southern division of the county and a resptactable
jury, of which Mr. Corish, P.L.G., was a foreman. The
jury returned a verdict of "found drowned".
While the inquest was being held it was reported that another body was
washed ashore at Ballyhealy. This body is supposed to be that of Captain
Griffiths of the same steam tug, for whose recovery there was
a reward of £5 offered. An inquest was held at Ballyhealy, on
Wednesday, when the body was identified as that of Captain Griffiths.
His name was on the watch found on the body, and in a pocketbook, found
also on the body, there was one sovereign and a half-sovereign. The
jury returned a verdict in accordance with the testimony given at the
enquiry.
