Griffith Valuation, Tomhaggard, 1853
In order to produce accurate information for local taxation, the Tenement Act of 1842 provided for a uniform valuation of all property in Ireland. The valuation was based on the productive capacity of land and the potential rents of buildings. Richard Griffith, appointed Commissioner of Valuation, lent his name to the survey. The Griffith Valuation lists every landholder and householder in Ireland.
Never intended as a census, the Griffith Valuation proves invaluable today since the 1851 census has not survived.
The Griffith Valuation took place in Wexford in 1853. The Tomhaggard segment of the valuation is transcribed below, in the original order. I have omitted tax values and ordinance survey references from this transcription. However, I have included “description of tenement” as this information is vital in determining the fixed abode of a landholder/householder. For example, Michael Colfer appears twice in the Kilmore segment of the Griffith Valuation – once in Lannagh and once in Sarshill. Upon closer inspection we can see that Michael probably lived in Sarshill as this is the only place where he has a house.
