Famine Fishermen & Boatowners Manifest
To Hamilton, K. G. Morgan Esq. M.P
Sir
We the undersigned
fishermen and boat owners of Kilmore approach you with the highest regard
and respect and humbly request of you to lay before The Board of Works
the bad state of our new Pier and the consequences likely to flow from
its present wrecked condition unless we are enabled to repair its outward
end.
It is quite unnecessary to inform you that if something be not immediately
granted to secure the part of the pier before mentioned it will be the
means of ruining this fishery altogether [a]s it will stop the mouth
of the old safety and thus cause incalculable mischief by throwing hundreds
of fishermen and their families out of employment you Sir can bear testimony
to the truth of these observations and also to the great disadvantages
we labour under in not having a safety for our boats. We therefore most
respectfully call upon you our representative to use your influence
not only to secure the present Wall but to complete the Pier and your
memorial will ever pray…
